: Revival of Traditional Architecture in Old Cities – Aleppo, the oldest inhabited city in the world as an example

Abstract

The term “Sustainability” is undoubtedly not innovative or new; it is an idea that has been implemented and expressed in the traditional architecture of several regions in the world through the harmony between buildings and the surrounding environment and the good utilization of natural recourses, which has evolved throughout the years through trial and error. At a certain point, city centers such as Aleppo turned into active places for tourism, trade and economics, and a lot of people relocated to modern housing at the west side of the city, hence there was a need to develop traditional houses and their facilities in a way that corresponds to modern life style.

This paper examines a case study of a traditional house that goes back to the eighteenth century, which was converted into a well-appointed hotel that allows its guests to relive the past in a modern context. The paper studies the traditional housing’s social and psychological perspective, as well as its architecture and functionality that had been influenced by the customs and traditions of the city. Additionally, the paper aims to enrich the universal practice of restoring heritage and traditions as a form of sustainability in traditional architecture, and illustrates the compound correlation between man and environment as a result of the modern evolution of societies, hence portraying sustainability in its various forms.

ُتشكّل الفراغاتُ أجزاءَ تأسيسيةَ مهمةَ من الأماكن التي نَتّصلُ و نتصرف فيها ومن خلالها , ومن المحتمل بان ( باركر ) كان أول من  تَوسّعَ بفكرة  ُ الأماكن السلوكية ً، عندما وَصفَ كَمْ أن السلوك متأثرُ ومعيق حتى بتلك الأماكنِ (باركر1968). وأشارَ بأنّ الأماكنِ تَشْملُ كلاً من  الطبيعية و المحيط الاجتماعي. المُصمّم الهولندي (ألدو) وَصفَ هذا بشكل رائع بوصفِه المشهورِ للمكانِ: (مهما كان البعد والوقت متوسطا” فالمناسبة في مكان ما تعني الفراغ أكثر) فالفراغ في صورة انسان مكان, والوقت في صورة انسان مناسبة. هذا يُشيرُ باختصار مفيد بأنّ المكان يَشْملُ الفراغِ حقاً، له بيئته المحيطة ومحتوياتها ولحظات استغلالها.

تميل مُناقشتنا للمِقياسِ إلى الإشارة ضمنياً
إلى أنَّ الإنسانِ حتى الآن مشاهد ساكنُ.
شكل آخر من أشكال المِقياسِ يتعلّقُ
بأنفسنا مباشرة من خلال نمطِنا مِنْ الحركةِ.
فحركتنا ضمن حجمنا الثابت يتضمن أيضاً
سرعة ثابتة من الحركة, فأبنية الطريقَ تَظْهرُ و
تتحرّك عبر مجال رؤيتنا معتمدة على ديمومة هذه
السرعةِ بشكل كبير. قَدْ م نْشي ضمن تلك الأبنية مباشرة، وربما على أرصفة شوارعها

الفراغ، وتلك الأشياء التي تحيط به، مركزي
أكبر بكثير في حياتِنا اليوميةِ مِنْ جماليةِ
تقنيةِ صرفة تماماً, أَو حتى اقتراحُ رمزي
التفسير. الفراغ الذي يضمنا جميعاً
وبشكل آني هو نفسه الذي قد يفصلنا عن الآخرين. هو هكذا, عامل حاسم في طريقِ عمل عِلاقاتِنا. الفراغ هو
المادة الضرورية كشكل أساسي مِنْ الاتصال وعالمي جدا وهو اللغة الإنسانية التي تكيف أسلوب حياتنا,مهما كانت
اختلافاتها الثقافيةُ، و يم يمكِْنُ أَنْ يُلاحظَ في جميع أنحاء العالم حيثما وحينما تواجد البشر سوية

لدينا نحن البشر أرواحُ معقّدةُ وهي بلا شك تكون على شكل بناء مركب كارتباط السلوكِ الفطري والمُكتَسَب أَو المتعلّم. إنّ تأريخَ عِلْمِ النفْس الإنسانيِ يثير نقاش دائم حول ” الطبيعة تقدم الغذاء” وهذا في الواقع ليس فقط ما تفعله الطبيعة, ولنبحث ببساطة جداً، هل هذا يكشفُ عن سؤالنا أم أن خصائص البشر وخبراتهم المتراكمة في الحياة هي المقياس الواجب اتخاذه لتحديد الإجابة, فالتجاربِ التي تَحْدثُ لنا في الحياةِ متنوعة ومختلفة التأثير علينا كأرواح قابلة للاستيعاب لكل المتغيرات حتى ولو تتم فرضها عن طريق الإجبار والوعظ من قبل الجهات الدينية بمعتقداتنا أو السلطات المدنية لتطبيق القوانين الناظمة للأمور والمتعلقة بجميع أوجه حياتنا , فقط الأحمق يُنكرُ التأثيرَ الواضحَ لكليهما، ولكن تأثيراتها المستقبلية بعد وضعها في الميزان لتحديد الاتجاهات النهائية ,ومعرفة إمكانية التغيير الحاصل يُمْكِنُ أَنْ يبْقى فلسفيا” نظريا” و متعلق بالجوانب السياسية والاقتصادية.
