ABSTRACT

This paper describes the contribution of Islamic civilization through the science of geometry and geometric proportions as a tool of design process in Islamic art design. Geometry and proportions underlines all forms of Islamic arts. It’s the visual means by which the human mind and heart can comprehend the order and harmony in creation.

Islamic art representations are ruled by geometric and musical proportion. Using the laws of proportion and symmetry, spaces are transformed from profane or quantitative into sacred or qualitative space.

This paper analyzes geometric principles and features of the design of traditional Islamic art, geometry refers to space, biomorphic design refers to time, calligraphy refers to space and time, with regard to geometric proportion analysis and describes the syntheses of Islamic art philosophy and metaphysical dimensions. finding that it followed a pre-established geometric and proportional design with high accuracy and great precision. These findings support the argument that geometry was independently discovered and used by Islamic culture as a universal language and constitutes one of the most important multicultural symbols in design.
