Thermal gain through windows

Abstract:

This paper investigates the effects of overhang as a shading device on the thermal gain through windows at different orientations in Amman. Having sized and selected the most efficient overhang according to its performance in the summer, its effect on the obstruction of direct solar radiation transmitted through the shaded windows during the winter was estimated. It was found that an overhang installed over a south-east oriented window is the most efficient shading device, with a maximum hourly thermal gain reduction of 65% in the summer. However, this overhang reduces, as much as 45%, the direct solar gain through the window in the winter that is used for passive heating, while the least efficient one is that installed over a window oriented due east, which has a maximum hourly reduction value in thermal gain of 40% in the summer and 80% in the winter.
