Thesis title: Agent-Based Emotional ntelligent
Model With Applications.
CIS Dept.
2
Research Synopsis:
The thesis proposes modeling of artificial emotions through agents based
on symbolic approach. The symbolic approach utilizes symbolic
emotional rule-based systems with continuous interactions with
environment and internal “thinking” machinery that comes because of
series of inferences, evaluation, evolution processes, adaptation, learning
and emotions.
We propose a general, flexible, and powerful architecture to build software agents that embed artificial emotions. The proposed agent possesses rational knowledge and reactive capabilities, and interacts with the external world, including other agents. Therefore, we want to develop artificial mechanisms that can play the role emotions play in natural life. We call these mechanisms “Artificial Emotions”. We investigate if artificial emotional control can improve performance of agents in some circumstances. We introduce a model that is base on both symbolic and computational relations. The main contribution of this thesis is to present emotions as a valid approach to improve the behavior of artificial agents. Moreover, we present a systematic view of the kinds of emotions that can take place, assuming emotions are processes involving assessment, emotion-signal generation, and emotion-response. To come across emotions, an agent needs to incorporate a deeper model of Personality, Mood and Sensitivity. We propose EMAM (Emotional Agent Model) for

this purpose. EMAM-Agent can generate emotions signals, evaluate and assess events, taking into account the integration of Personality, Mood, Sensitivity, Feeling and Motivational States. EMAM takes proper actions or plans for actions (sequence of actions). Two different applications such as Material Requirement Planning (as business application) and Orphanage Care Application (as social application) are incorporate to demonstrate the use of EMAM emotional agent. We use Netlogo as an agent programming language, which is an agent-oriented language to simulate and implement our proposed models.
In our agent-based applications tow models are build; one is support with artificial emotions and the other one without emotions. We use both in solving the two-benchmark problems. The two systems are simulated and results are comparing. Our study shows that systems with proper model of emotions can perform in many cases better than systems without emotions. We try to shed the light here on how artificial emotions can be modeled in a simple rule-based agent systems and if emotions as they exist in “real intelligence” can be helpful for “artificial intelligence agents”. Our proposed emotional intelligent agent architectures are present as a generic blueprint on which the design of agents of that type is base. Our focus is on the functional design, including flow of information and control.
